1. As a parent, can I be present during my child’s lesson?

STAR Aquatics has found most young children perform better when they can’t see their parents while classes are being conducted.  With this well proven system, parents are requested to sit off to the side of the pool area during lessons.  STAR Aquatics realizes children need recognition and encouragement from parents on their progress; please observe and let the instructors teach.

2. Any refund if my child misses only 1 day of lessons?

While we sympathize for any illness and special circumstances, STAR Swim School Policy does not allow a refund for only 1 missed class.  Your child’s instructor will know about the absence and will make every effort to help your child catch up, but not at the expense of the other swimmer’s group time.  If concerned about not letting your child fall behind in class, we recommend scheduling a private lesson before your next group lesson.

3. Will my child graduate their level every time they enroll?

The STAR Swim School program is taught in four distinct and progressive levels.  Each level consists of several advancement goals and objectives, which represent skills each child will learn before advancing to the next level.  Each child develops at his/her own rate, and will advance to the next level only when they are ready.  Others who need more repetition will remain in the same level.  If your child’s instructor feels they need additional attention in a specific area before advancing, we recommend scheduling a private lesson with the Swim School Director.

4. Should my child take group or private lessons?

At the STAR Swim School, we favor group swim lessons for children who are ready to learn within a small group setting.  Small groups of six children or less provide effective practice and instruction, while presenting the opportunity to watch other children perform swimming skills.  However, not all children learn best in a group situation.  A Parents decision must take into account their child’s temperament and learning style, when deciding group or private lessons.  Semi-private lessons are also available through the STAR Aquatics Swim School.

5. How should I know if my child is ready for swim lessons?

At STAR Aquatics, we firmly believe any child should become comfortable in the water at the earliest possible age.  The sooner a child is at ease in the water, the chances of developing a FEAR of the water decreases.  The STAR Swim School feels kids as young as 30 months old and older are physically ready to learn kicking and buoyancy skills.  We encourage any swimmers who can already demonstrate these skills before our minimum age requirement to wait until they are 30 months old to enroll in the Starburst Level.

6. I’m thinking about enrolling, can I come watch a class in progress?

Seeing is believing; come watch us in action.  STAR Aquatics understands this could be a major part of your decision making, to see if our program fits your needs.  At STAR Aquatics, we believe we offer a first-class swim experience.

7. How do I decide which level my child should be in?

Our minimum requirements for each level our listed on the Swim School Class Levels Page.  We encourage each parent to realistically assess their child’s skill level.  If your child is placed in a level not suited for their needs, our instructors will evaluate and assess each child at their first class time.

8. My child has special needs, can I still enroll them?

STAR Aquatics believes everyone should experience the benefits of swimming.

9. When will my swimmer be ready to join STAR Swim Team program?

Every swimmer develops skills at their own rate.  After completing our “Shooting Star” level in our Swim School, your swimmer will have a better understanding of the swimming fundamentals.  This level makes for a smooth transition from their swim school experience into the expectations of our Swim Team Program.

10. What should I do if my child is nervous about his/her first day of their swim lessons and what should they expect?

At STAR Aquatics Swim School, you will find our instructors take a nurturing approach when teaching children to swim.  Our instructors are trained to help reluctant children to adapt to the Swim School environment.  Parents, you will need to prepare their children for the first day of swim lessons -- you know your child better than anyone.

11. My swimmer is wanting to practice what they have learned in their lessons, where can we go?

Grimsley High School’s pool is open on the weekends and charges $2 or less a person, depending on age.  The pool is open on Saturday 1-5pm and Sunday 2-5pm.

12. Where are the Swim School lessons held?

Classes are held at the Greensboro College pool.  The pool is located in the Reynolds Center building at the corner of West Market and Tate Street.

13. When are the classes held?

Classes are given in 'sessions' and operate with various times.  Classes run once or twice a week, depending on the session and level.  Private and private paired lessons are scheduled in advance on an appointment basis.

14. What if my child already knows how to swim?

For those swimmers who can already perform the basics skills, we recommend our “Shooting Star” level for the Swim School.  It is a perfect introduction or refinement for our Swim Team.  The Shooting Star level serves as an entry level for those young swimmers who wish to join the STAR Aquatics Swim Team.  Call Jay Dodson 336-337-0169, the Head Coach of Guilford College with any questions about placement for this situation.

15. What else should I know about your Swim School classes?

Read our Guidelines for Parents to learn other important details about our Swim School programs.

16. How do I sign-up for the next Swim School class?

You can sign-up for one of the next Swim School sessions by visiting the STAR Aquatics website www.staraquatics.net, click Swim School link, then click the Register Now link.  We strongly recommend signing up for one of the next sessions here on our website by registering online, since we schedule first come, first serve.

17. Can we purchase any swim equipment or swimming aids from STAR Aquatics?

We offer goggles and swim caps for swim school.  Make sure to indicate your need when you register online, to help ensure our stock meets demand.  You may also purchase equipment directly from the STAR Store.  From the STAR Aquatics website, www.staraquatics.net, click the STAR Store link and you can make your purchase online.

18. When and how do I make payment for each session or for private lessons?

All payments must be made on the first day of each session and before your child’s class begins.  Any semi-private or private lessons will also make payment at the scheduled lesson time.  Payment should be mailed to STAR Aquatics Attn: Swim School P.O. Box 16311 High Point, NC 27261.

19. Will my 10 year old be swimming with 5 year olds in certain groups?

Swimming is a skilled based sport.  The Swim School is structured around learning specific skills before moving on to the next level.  It is possible this situation may occur and we will make every effort to make the entire group fell comfortable with their peers, regardless of age.

20. My swimmer is already enrolled in a STAR Swim School session.  In order for my child to progress, how do I make sure to place him the correct level for the next session and reserve a spot?

There will be a progress evaluation period for every group during each session of swim school.  During this time, the instructor will make an assessment of your swimmer’s skills.  Based upon the instructor’s observation up to this time, they will make a recommendation for your child to either remain in the same level for the next session or graduate to the next level.  STAR will keep any spot available in the next session, for any level, to currently enrolled swimmers to ensure they are give priority and continue to make progress.

At the end of the progress evaluation period, you must decide to enroll your child in the next session or lose your priority during the open registration.

21. I never learned how to swim as a child, is it too late to learn as an adult?

It is never too late.  If you are ready and willing, STAR can teach any skill level from uncomfortable in the water to proper stroke technique of all four competitive strokes.  Our Adult program is currently on a private and paired lesson basis ONLY.
